Past campaigns: HREOC National TTI Inquiry

Recently, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) held an inquiry into the discrimination faced by same-sex couples in Australia. Unfortunately, the inquiry's terms of reference did not include transgender, transsexual and intersex people.

TTI people face high levels of discrimination and an inquiry is urgently needed. Some of the many problems TTI people face include:

  • a lack of patient-centered care for people with intersex conditions;

  • difficulty changing the sex marker on identifying documents, such as birth certificate, passport and driver's license; and

  • a lack of public and private coverage for essential medical treatment. For example, trans women who have not undergone genital surgery are usually regarded as male by the Health Insurance Comission and can be denied access to the Medicare rebate for mammograms, increasing their risk of developing breast cancer.

WA Gender Project call on the allies of TTI people to show their support for an inquiry by writing to HREOC. You can download a template letter from our website, but it will help if you re-phrase the template into your own words. (A few unique letters carry more weight than many identical ones). Letters to HREOC must include your name and address or they will be ignored. If you don't have time to write a letter, please consider sending an e-mail to newcomplaints@humanrights.gov.au

The Australian Human Rights Commission has since conducted an inquiry into the human rights issues faced by TTI people.

The inquiry resulted in the publication of two reports:

Further details about the inquiry can be found on the Australian Human Rights Commission website.
